Saying that her scheme is sport royal means that Maria is making a game out of embarrassing Malvolio. She may also be saying that it will be easy to make a fool out of him. The phrase sport royal also reminded me of hunting. To Maria, Malovio is her prey and she is the hunter.
Matt, I see where youre going with this and I agree with you. It seems that they are setting the trap up for Malvolio just as they would do in hunting. They are on the hunt and since Malvolio considers himself of nobility, once he and Olivia are together, this seems to me where the word "royal" comes in in royal sport.
ReplyDeleteI agree also, but you didn't mention the others (Toby, Andrew) that are involved in the plan. Are they less of a hunter than Maria? Are they significant in the scheme?
ReplyDelete@ stephanie. True they are involved, by Maria is the mastermind behind the plan. I would say Maria is the real hunter, she's creating the bait for her prey (Malvolio). Good point though, I didn't make this clear
